Lab – CML Setup

Topology & Background / Scenario

The objective of this lab is to install, configure, and validate a fully functional instance of Cisco Modeling Labs (CML-Free) on a local workstation. The lab will use VMware Workstation Pro or VMware Fusion as the virtualization hypervisor. You will access the CML via a web browser to create, test and simulate network topologies.

Required Resources: Latest version of VMware Fusion (Mac Intel models only) or Workstation Pro (PC), and Free version of Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) 2.9 or later.

Part 1: Software Download

Step 1: Download VMware Fusion Pro (Mac) or Workstation (PC)

1. Navigate to broadcom.com. Log in or register for a new account in the Support Portal to access free Broadcom resources.
2. After you have logged in, select My Downloads in the left panel. Select the HERE link to list the available free software.
3. Select VMware Workstation Pro for Windows-based or Linux-based PCs or VMware Fusion for Intel-based and Apple silicon Macs. (Note: VMware Fusion is not available for M-series Macs).
4. Select the latest version for your OS, review the Terms and Conditions, agree, and initiate the download.

Step 2: Download the free Cisco Modeling Labs server.

1. Navigate to cisco.com. Log in or register. Complete your Cisco profile (select Personal and enter company details or “Self”).
2. Find and select the Downloads link. In the Select a Product field, enter Modeling Labs.
3. Select CML-Free. Download the files cml2_f-x.x.x-amd64-x.ova and refplat-yyyymmdd-free-iso.zip.
4. Unzip the zip file to a folder for installation in a later step.

Part 2: CML Setup

Step 1: Install VMware Workstation Pro or Fusion.

1. Locate the installation file and follow the wizard instructions.

Step 2: Set up the Virtual Machine.

1. Start VMware. Select Open a Virtual Machine and import the downloaded .ova file.
2. After importing, DO NOT power on yet. Select Edit virtual machine settings.
3. Connect the refplat ISO file to the CD/DVD (IDE) drive and check Connect at power on.
4. Use Host-only or NAT for the Network Adapter to receive an IP address from the built-in DHCP server.
5. Select Play or Power on this virtual machine.

Step 3: Set up the CML-Free Server.

1. Press enter when prompted with <Continue>. Accept the EULA by pressing A.
2. Accept the standalone all-in-one deployment and default hostname.
3. Define complex passwords for the sysadmin (CML controller access) and admin (CML server/topology access) users.
4. Use DHCP to configure the IPv4 address and confirm the configuration.
5. Once setup finishes, open a web browser and navigate to the IP address shown on the VMware screen to access the CML UI. Log in with the admin credentials.

Part 3: Build Your First Network Topology

In the free version of CML, you are limited to 5 running nodes simultaneously. External Connectors and Unmanaged Switches do not count against this limit.

Step 1: Create a new lab topology.

1. Click ADD in the Dashboard to start a new lab.
2. In the Workbench, click Add Nodes. Drag and drop 2 IOL and 2 IOL-L2 nodes onto the page.
3. Connect the devices by right-clicking > Add Link. (e.g., iol-l2-0 <----> iol-0 <----> iol-1 <----> io1-l2-1).

Step 2: Configure the devices via the console.

1. Click LAB > Start Lab.
2. Once booted, right-click the device, select Console, and click OPEN CONSOLE.
3. Configure devices using standard IOS commands. Save using copy running-config startup-config.
4. To persist configs after a restart, select the device and click FETCH in the PANES window.
