The Four Planes Explained

🧠 1. Control Plane

Purpose: Makes forwarding decisions via topology awareness.

Protocol: LISP (Locator/ID Separation)

Components: EID, RLOC, Map-Server, Map-Resolver
Commands:
Router# show lisp instance-id <id> ipv4 map-cache
Router# debug lisp events

🚀 2. Data Plane

Purpose: Forwards packets using encapsulation.

Technology: VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN)

Flow: Edge encapsulates → Underlay → Decapsulates
Commands:
Switch# show vxlan interface
Switch# debug vxlan packet

🎛️ 3. Management Plane

Purpose: Configuration, monitoring, automation.

Controller: Cisco DNA Center

Functions: Discovery, provisioning, health, SWIM
Commands:
Router# show dna-center connectivity

Purpose: Identity-based communication rules.

Technology: SGT + Group-Based Policy

🚨 Common Issues

  • LISP map-cache empty? → Check Map-Server, underlay reachability
  • VXLAN packets dropped? → Verify MTU (1600+), NVE status
  • SGT not propagating? → Confirm CTS enabled, SXP active
  • DNA Center offline? → Check NETCONF/SSH, credentials, PnP
  • Edge not forwarding? → Verify fabric role, instance-id, VRF
